Heritages of Industrial Modernization

“Heritage of Industrial Modernization” is a designation given by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry to buildings and machines that contributed to the modernization of Japanese industry from the 19th century to the first half of the 20th century. Okaya City has a total of 15 silk reeling assets that have been designated in this way. The city still has a number of silk reeling locations, such as the Former Yamaichi Hayashigumi Silk Reeling Office and Guardhouse, which celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2021; the Ichiyamaka Hayashi Group’s residence known as the Former Hayashi Residence, which is also a registered tangible cultural property of Japan; Tsurumine Park, a famous azalea spot said to be the best in central Japan; and the Marunaka Miyasaka Silk Reeling cocoon warehouse, which is still in use today. There is also a walking course that takes you to historical sites throughout Okaya City while enjoying the charm it has to offer. It is particularly beautiful along the Yokawa River with the cherry blossoms in the spring and autumn leaves in the fall.
